At Human Ventures, we believe founders need more than just capital to build a valuable business. The success or failure of an early startup is directly related to the interconnected network around it. In other words, it’s all about the people. Since our inception, Human has lived by this principle to bring the best and brightest people around the world-class founders that build with us. That’s why we’re introducing a new role at Human Ventures: the Engineer in Residence.
Our Engineer-in-Residence role is designed for software engineers who have a ferocious curiosity, want exposure to some of New York’s most diverse and innovative founders, and believe in the potential of the venture studio as a model for building the most impactful companies and products of our time.
If you are looking for a place to explore new ideas and you love building from zero to one, we want to hear from you.
What you will do
1. Build. You’ll ship web applications into market with talented serial entrepreneurs, product managers and designers who have come from leading growth stage startups and tech companies. This is a place to turn nothing into something within a matter of weeks. We strongly prefer engineers who have 4+ years of software development behind them and are ready to get back into the “garage” to build great products from scratch. The stack varies based on the company, but we work heavily with frameworks and languages like: React, GraphQL/Apollo, Node.js, Ruby/Rails.
2. Test. Human gives you the opportunity to test the waters across different studio companies, sharpening your sense of where to go next. Typically, you’ll build with a studio company for a quarter and then either join full-time or embark on a new entrepreneurial adventure with another idea in our pipeline. You’ll have the freedom and flexibility with the support of a world-class venture studio. We start with people before ideas and we’re building a diverse set of companies with unique technical challenges.
3. Learn. Learn how New York’s most exciting startups are built from the ground up. Because you’ll be working directly with founders in the studio, you’ll experience what it takes to build a company, not just a product. You’ll be able to spend time with customers and see how they interact with your products, and then immediately head back to the laboratory to iterate with the founders. Human’s companies have gone onto raise over $100M in institutional funding, which gives you the chance to grow with the team you build with.
This is not a side hustle. We want our Engineers-in-Residence to embed with our studio, so we ask that you can commit a minimum of six months to working with us. Human offers competitive compensation, with the ability to devote 20% of your time to a passion project that may eventually become your calling.
